ASHLAND, Va. (WRIC) — More than 60 trains pass through the town of Ashland every 24 hours.

Now, during the holidays, there is even more for passengers to look at: 55,000 lights!

The hope is that these lights will be more than just something pretty to look at.

“We want people on the outside to see the charm of our small town and see the beauty of the lights,” said Tom Wulf, Director of the Ashland Main Street Association. “This place is like magic right now.”

Downtown Ashland is covered in lights; the idea came as a way to give back to the train company and the passengers. The town and the trains have had a 180-year relationship.

“The thought was to make Ashland a postcard, a mile long post card for people traveling on the train going along and giving them something beautiful to look at,” Mayor James Foley said.

Those on Main Street also know that joining the holiday spirit is good for business.

“Our businesses recognize that the more visitors we bring in from the outside the better our businesses where fare,” Wulf said.

Businesses like Jezebel’s Boutique, where Vicki Hendrick said anything to bring people downtown is a good idea.

“I’m sure it will attract more people and the people on the trains love it,” Vicki Hendrick said. “You can see people waving when they see the lights outside all lit up.”

So far, with nothing but positive feedback, the lights should be here to stay for holidays to come.

“I hope that we do this every year for the foreseeable future,” said Mayor Foley. “Let’s make it a wonderful holiday tradition for the area.”

The Main Street Association has other holiday events planned through the season.
