Business Spotlight: England Street Tavern

England Street Tavern on a busy night

Folks who have lived in Hanover County for a while remember “Break Time,” the pool hall with a reputation for bar fights and sticky tables.  Todd and Kelley Bishop want you to know that there is a new Tavern in town, and it is squeaky clean.  Come for the wings, burgers and spiced steamed shrimp, and stay for the live music!

The Bishops have been painting and cleaning since the summer of 2014, and are proud of being selected the Local’s Choice winner of “Best Live Musical Venue” two years in a row.  The England Street Tavern calendar is full of national, regional and local music acts.  Rising stars like Danny Kensy, a Lee Davis High School graduate, and groups like rockabilly favorite “Cha Cha’s Cadillac,” Beaverdam’s “Cobalt Whiskey,” and Nashville recording artist, Laura Rice.

Owner Todd Bishop is, first and foremost, a music lover.  He has toured with bands and met many musicians in his lifetime.  When the opportunity arose to buy “Break Time,” he jumped at the chance to leave the insurance world and buy the old pool hall with the dream of creating a respected music venue.   One look at his events calendar on Facebook, and you can see Todd is well on his way.

And if all this doesn’t convince you to visit the England Street Tavern, consider the fact that Todd regularly partners with charity groups to raise money for good causes.  In just a few short years, he has contributed to the Kidney Foundation, the Red Cross, Hanover Humane Society, Bikers Against Child Abuse, Angel Tree and many other worthy organizations.  On November 3, “A Night of Country Music” with The Josh Duncan Band, The Laura Rice Trio and Cody Spicer supports the victims of Hurricane Harvey through the Red Cross.

Come see Todd, Kelley, Greg, Helen, Jesse and Jane at the England Street Tavern soon. Ask them to cook up some “yellow jacket” wings with their original honey barbecue sauce, and then—depending on the day of the week–stay for karaoke, trivia games and/or live music!
