Business Spotlight: Center of the Yarniverse

Center Of The Yarniverse launched in November 2018 to great excitement in our community. Located at 109 England St, the shop is a cozy space with exposed brick walls filled with yarn of every color and fiber imaginable.  As the only yarn shop in Hanover County, in addition to being one of only three in the entire Richmond metro area, owner Stacy Williamson’s customers come from far and wide to peruse her selection that includes local gems and international favorites.

Stacy states she wants customers to feel inspired. “It’s a very calm and relaxing space, people come in happy,” she smiles.  The shop’s plush seating, great light, and cozy feel are conducive to relaxation and centering. “People can come in, hang out, and work on projects,” says Stacy.

If you’re interested in getting started in either knitting or crocheting, Center Of The Yarniverse hosts classes for beginners.  Likewise, if you’re experienced in the craft, they host classes that work to hone more advanced skills.

Center Of The Yarniverse has made itself right at home in downtown Ashland, collaborating with several local business to put on community events.  On Wednesdays evenings from 7-9, you can find Stacy at Ashland Coffee & Tea (located 50 yards down the street across the railroad tracks) hosting a Sit n’ Stitch.  If you’re not familiar, Sit n’ Stitch is a great opportunity for knitting and crocheting enthusiasts to meet others who share their hobby, collaborate, inspire, and make new friends.  There is also a group in the area called Hops n’ Hooks, which meets at area breweries to connect over local beers.  They recently met at Origin Beer Lab in downtown Ashland on the tracks.  Stacy and the management at Origin are working to make this a regular meet up, so be sure to keep an ear open for this exciting collaboration.

Stacy is very open about her love for Ashland, and how welcoming the entire community has been to her new business.  The 26-year resident, who was a special education teacher for Hanover Public Schools until last June, couldn’t imagine opening her store anywhere else. “Everyone has been very welcoming and supportive”, and in fact the buzz online preceding her opening Center Of The Yarniverse surprised her.  “The way Ashland has been changing over the past few years, it’s more creative” says Williamson, citing the openings and renovations of several local landmarks like the Ashland Theatre.

Center Of The Yarniverse has an exciting vision for the future with more classes, workshops, and collaborations with other local businesses planned.  They have an excellent website, CenterOfTheYarniverse.com, as well as a presence on Instagram and Facebook for all upcoming programming and news.  The shop at 109 England Street and is open daily Tuesday through Saturday.  For specific hours or questions, you can check their website, call (804) 362-7800, or email CenterOfTheYarniverse@gmail.com.
